Crystal Castles - Baptism

Back on form

Baptism

Baptism is the follow up single to Crystal Castles’ more mainstream release Celestica the other month. For those of you who found the last single a little tame, this one should get the heat beating fast again as it certainly sees a return to the more intense sounds that are usually associated with Crystal Castles. I can’t see it being given as much airplay as the last single, especially during the day but I certainly prefer this one.

This track has a real electro dance feel to it and it’s the intensity of the vocal that is what makes it feel quite different to much else that is around now. The vocal is quite shouty and quite produced, it’s not really even singing, at least I don’t call it singing. The melody is held in a sequence of bleeps and put with other sounds and those punky thrash metal style vocals give the track quite a bit of an edgy feeling. This feels really euphoric as well as quite devious. Crystal Castles have always had that horror film soundtrack kind of vibe to me, I’m not sure what it is but there is often something in their material that puts me on edge and this is no different.
