The Pipettes - Call Me

Pop overkill?

Call Me

So last time The Pipettes released a single I said that it was a shame that Kylie had not released it as it deserved to be played. This time I feel like it is almost a little too much Kylie and a bit of pop overkill. I know the 80s are back in fashion and have been for what seems like quite some time, but this feels like it’s pushing well into the realms of bad pop. It sounds like such an awful thing to say when I thought the last single Stop The Music was so good, it had a totally different flavour to this though. This feels like it’s been pushed out of the pop mill in a bit of a hurry and doesn’t have anything charming about it like their original sound or even like the last single.

You know what though it is catchy as hell and even though it really doesn’t float my boat, especially with those “ohh sha la las”, it does have something there despite it being lyrically poor. What I try to remind myself is that it is just as hard to write a pop song like this as it is to write anything that catches the attention of many. I’m still just not convinced this will catch the attention of the right people or in the right way? Are we ready for a new girl pop duo so squeeze the death out of us with these overly sweet, overly produced sounds? I kind of hope not because I’d like to see The Pipettes at least hint more at their past sound than just leave it left behind.
