School Of Seven Bells - Disconnect From Desire

I've disconnected

Disconnect From Desire

Previously to hearing this album I will freely admit that I had only ever heard one song by this band, I’m quite ashamed of this fact really, as I do love the one song I have and being a lover of music I should have followed that up. I hope now that I am making amends by getting to grips with this album.

Disconnect From Desire has some quality pop and electronica music to be had. You won’t fail to notice the potential for wider commercial success from opening track Windstorm, which has a really catchy melody and equally catchy lyrics. There’s also plenty of electronica in place, tracks such as Heart Is Strange and Dust Devil have such appeal to me. In fact between those three I cannot pick a favourite. Perhaps at a push it would be Dust Devil, it has a slightly harder electro feel, a darker side perhaps. I find it really interesting the way they have mixed this music with these kind of harmonies, it’s not a new concept or idea but it’s always something I enjoy and perhaps the dual harmonies of twin sisters helps to give it extra depth.

Despite the fact that this is in fact a great album, it really isn’t an album I can listen to on repeat for very long, songs start slipping into each other, more because of the vocal style than the actual music. Yes each track does have it’s own vocal melody but I’ve listened to the album so much now that I’m getting a little lost in what is what because the vocals are so similar on each track especially tracks Joviann and Camarilla. There are of course a few exceptions such as Windstorm, Bye Bye Bye and Dust Devil, but they are my stand out tracks. If I’m honest, after so many listens the beautiful harmonies have now began to frustrate me somewhat as I still feel as though I am waiting for them to speed up a little, to change a little more but they don’t. I do love the album, but it needs a time and place for me and it needs not to be listened to over and over.
